It’s not too often I get to reveal an event ahead of time on the SeenInGreenwich blog (hence the past tense!), but this post is about something fun coming up in Greenwich on Sunday.
As a keen rower at school (and a hungover and eventually ‘retired’ rower at university), I wanted to get back on the scene since moving to Greenwich and have joined Globe Rowing Club.
It’s a great little club, located near the Trafalgar Tavern and we’ll be entering a women’s eight in the Greenwich Head of the river race on Saturday.
The race is a 3.5 mile stretch of Tidal Water from Wapping Pier to Poplar Rowing Club (the far side of the Greenwich foot tunnel). It’s a 9.30 am start but there will be plenty of activity before then as crews row up to the start, and afterwards when we all disembark and collapse into an exhausted heap…
The viewing point near the Greenwich foot tunnel would be a great place to watch the finish, or other spots on the Thames pathway would still mean you can catch some of the action. With 34 crews racing you’re bound to see something, so do come along and give us a wave. We won’t be able to wave back, but your support will be greatly appreciated!
Also, we’re actually racing in preparation for the Women’s Eights Head of the River Race or ‘WEHORR’ (stop sniggering at the back) in March, which is a much larger annual event over a longer course. It even has pubs you can watch from, so if you develop a ‘talent for spectating’ at Greenwich Head, there’s plenty more fun to come…stay tuned!
